Work Overview

Cross Modifications represents how many areas of the Australian Landscape can experience drastic change over time. These dramatic changes are normally dependant on rainfall and can result in large areas of little or no vegetation and life during dry periods, and a complete transformation to dense vegetation and wildlife population during wet periods.

Cross Modifications contrasts two harmonic spectra (chords based on the harmonic series) that gradually change over time and include various parametric filtering shapes. These two spectra initially only use equal tempered pitches, but gradually incorporate various quartertonal pitches as the work unfolds. Melodic lines are added over these spectra in the voices and electric guitar as an added dimension to the texture. The two spectra also initially appear independently of each other. This changes as the two spectra increasingly overlap as the work progresses until they are placed on top of each other at the climactic point. The pitches of each then gradually fade out during the short finale.
