Work Overview
It is often claimed that the tuning system known as "just intonation" is incapable of transposition from one key to another. Hence musical forms such as fugues which rely heavily on transposition are not possible. However this is only true if the number of notes used by the composer is limited - and American composer Ben Johnston has written large-scale works for strings which demonstrate many transpositional possibilities. This short and subtly chromatic 4-part fugue uses a scale of 24 tones/octave based on Johnston's theories.

Written in just intonation based on a scale of 25 tones/octave proposed by Ben Johnston.
This work was originally devised as the version for 88 note MIDI keyboard, with each note's pitch tuned in accordance with a specified tuning chart.
