Work Overview
Over 2250 years ago, Ancient Greek polymath Eratosthenes of Cyrene produced a now lost work: a compendium of constellations and their myths, the Catasterismi, or "placing of the stars". The work outlined astral mythology in great detail, including the origin of the constellations, their meanings, and associations with the gods, goddesses and mythical creatures of Ancient Greece.
ΚΑΤΑΣΤΕΡΙΣΜΟΊ for Symphony Orchestra begins in stillness, born from the darkness - silence. As individual stars begin to flicker, the texture unfolds into the alluring darkness of the night. Intense figures with beautiful release reflect the energetic burn of each individual star, and the shifting of celestial bodies into and away from alluring shapes and patterns, like the intricate patchwork of celestial pastoral fields. Dance-like gestures gently bounce the listener between the shapes and creatures of the sky.
The work's climax explores a hypothetical and impossible event - all forty-eight constellations aligning and illuminating the sky at once, illustrating a blazing celestial tapestry.
