My former colleague at the Uni asked me to write something without strings, as in his (he was a sound master) orchestra the poor strings never get any time off! As all orchestras have the same problem I felt it a good idea!! As soloists don't suffer from this ailment, solo violin was the way to go. Unfortunately cellos and basses only relief was leaving the bow at home, but, of course they asked if I will be content with out of tune pizzicatos?
