Work Overview

Veni Creator Spiritus is a short unaccompanied choral setting of the text attributed to Rabanus Maurus (d. 856). The work begins with an arrangement of the original plainchant melody, written in a rather traditional musical style, followed by music that features a quite different stylistic approach and which also makes use of the text in quite different ways. The latter part of the piece makes extensive use of additive rhythmic structures, and regular changes of metre, in attempt to turn the setting into one that is essentially celebratory and rhythmically-exciting.
