Score
Undulations : for two soprano saxophones / Daniel Portelli.
Library shelf no. 785.87212/POR 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Undulations describes the wave-like patterns that emerged as I explored the subtle and intricate possibilities of timbre on two soprano saxophones. There was a rather conscious process of compression and expansion of these patterns that became a common thread through the material. I see these waves as the continuum between the changes in the piece, through the extended techniques and the pointillistic dot-like patterns. On a micro level, acts of playful restlessness move in and out of intimate moments of stillness, from soft subtle entanglements and breathy sounds to hard syncopated tongue snaps. The two instruments blend into each other and play a variety of multiphonics that sits alongside a more restricted limitation of movement in minor second and microtonal intervals.
