Work Overview
Mvt 1 - After M -Inspired by Milhaud who composed the
first multi-percussion concerto, and Michael Colgrass, who after
studying with him charted a new direction for the snare drum,
this movement pays tribute to both. It makes a multiple piece of
a single drum (after Milhaud), and extends the sound sources of
the drum (after Michael).
Mvt 2 - An' if…? - An' if we have no sticks, what is
left?
A silent drum? … Of sound bereft?
Or can fingers and nails in retrospect give
A more subtle tone to this narrative?
Mvt 3 - Scherzando Spiccato - A light-hearted approach
to a playful genre prompted an experimentation of technique. The
movement is played with one brush and fingers to explore the
sonic potential of the drum and the broadening of technical
applications.
Mvt. 4 - Continuity of Change - This movement is
inspired by the aural deception of seemingly 2 drummers playing
with one line of accents over a seemingly continuous roll. The
feel moves from 4/4 to 6/8 to 4/4, and increases in tempo and
intensity, incorporating extra timbres of woodblock and cowbell
in the last 14 measures.
