Work Overview

King Solomons Cave was composed from December through to February of 2007/08, and was first performed by the grade 6 Central Band of the Combined Primary Schools Band Program, Southern Tasmania.

In 2023 I reworked this piece for the combined first year learner band of the CPSBP to mark the first year of my wife, Claire, being Combined Schools Music Program Leader (South).

I composed this work after visiting the Mole Creek Caves in Northern Tasmania. In King Solomons Cave I hope to represent something of the mystery and grandeur of this amazing part of the world.

In 2023 the first year learners band numbers around 360, of which I have personally started 95 - the most of my teaching career. In addition, one of these students is my eldest son, Owen.

I dedicate this piece to all these wonderfully excitable and enthusiastic 10, 11 and 12 year olds!
