Work Overview
This is quite a large-scale piece, with demands on both performers individually but also in terms of ensemble playing. Each instrument at different times takes on the characteristics of the other - the clarinet playing percussively staccato for quite a long stretch, and by means of tremolo, the piano imitates the ability of the clarinet to sustain sounds. This latter technique produces areas of relative tranquility, but the need to assert their individual characters creates flashes of virtuosity and soloistic passges.
The title also refers to the struggle which was current in East Timor.
