Rendition Clinic is an exploration of light and sound attacks. Two percussionists are paired with two modified strobe lights (controlled by the third player) to create a quartet of sonic-visual relationships. The percussionists' sounds are derived from a combination of the audible 'clack' produced by the strobes as the high voltage capacitors discharge, as well as a linked customsynth that produces tones at the outer extremes of our audible range. In a simple three-part structure, the sometimes disconcerting combination of light and sound pulses references the use of strobes to affect altered states of perception in settings ranging from nightclubs to medical clinics to 'soft' torture. Many thanks to percussionists Eugene Ughetti, Matthias Schack Arnott and Louise Devenish for their creative input in developing the work and to Steffan Ianigro for 'hacking' the strobes.
