The Children's Day, op. 99 : mezzo-soprano voice with accompaniment

by Jacqui Rutten (2019)

Work Overview

This song reminds us of those less fortunate than ourselves. A group of poorer children were taken to the countryside for a day, to learn from the beauty of nature. My theme for this year's Sacred Stage concerts is Song as a Sacred Pathway into Nature. The poem is by the Blind Poetess of Ulster, Frances Browne. I visited her birthplace in Northern Ireland, in 2018, and met helpful local historian Patrick Bonar.
The setting takes a basically strophic form of repeating melodic verses. The first verse was composed while sitting on a rock on the Warburton river, while staying at a photographer friend's Air BnB. The rest was composed outdoors in the Dandenong Ranges, where the traditional owners are the Wurundjeri. The song was composed with pen and paper outdors to realise the sounds of nature, and notes were checked at the piano.
The song was composed for myself to sing with Cora Teeuwen (viola) and Mary Knights-Rutten (piano).
