Jacinta Painting under Trees, op. 108 (medium voice with piano)

by Jacqui Rutten (2020)

Work Overview

Jacinta Painting under Trees, is a setting of Maureen Boyle's poem, from her book of poetry called "The Work of a Winter" which Maureen sent to me. I was so thrilled to read this poem because I met both Maureen and Jacinta O'Reilly at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, in Ireland, during a composing residency. Jacinta had also lived in Australia, teaching art, and the song reminded me of the way indigenous painters of our beautiful nation also paint outdoors. I usually compose en plein air but the weather was cold and rainy during the pandemic winter of 2020. The song was composed with pen and paper.
