Work Overview

This work, my first string quartet, was jointly commissioned by the ABC Fresh Start Fund and the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival for premiere performance by the Goldner String Quartet. It was first begun in June 2020, but most progress towards completion was made over the autumn of 2021.

Though conceived in three movements, all are closely connected to one another - they share similar points of departure and return but take differing journeys through the primary harmonic material (a 'distorted' triad on C, first heard at the very beginning). The first movement sustains a gentle, flowing pulse throughout; the second is a lively scherzo, whilst the third is a more extended slow movement which constitutes the expressive heart of the work.
