Work Overview

These twelve genre pieces explore various moods and styles from the opening guitar-like prelude, through the improvised character of the second piece, the two etudes (nos. 3 and 11), the chorale-like chaconne (no. 7) and the two canons and fugue (nos. 4, 10 and 8). Pieces 5 and 6 have scherzando characters, while nos. 9 and 12 are notable for exploring unpitched percussive effects and reprising elements from the first piece respectively. This said, all of the pieces have a strong narrative flavour - although no specific program is intended (hence the title).
