A neo-classic work originally conceived for brass quintet, Variations and Capriccio demonstrates the rhythmic influence of Tippett and the textural characteristics of Britten, combining these with Debussyian parallel chordal movement and Hindemithian quartal writing to form a contrasting palette of blended styles.
Instrumentation: String orchestra (126.96.36.199.2 minimum).
Duration: 19 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — professional string orchestra
The work comprises an original theme followed by five contrasting variations linked to a lively capriccio by a cadenza for the section leaders of the first and second violins.
- In the form/style of: Variations
