Work Overview
This rhythmic study, marked Presto, commemorates the bedraggled sign painted on a broken rectangle of masonite nailed to a post at the foot of the steps leading up to the composer's home in 1963 - a seedy flat in a crumbling apartment block in Sydney, Australia, which looked north along Bondi Beach, offering a millionaire's view for a rent of eight pounds a week. It has long been replaced by expensive waterview apartments. The seedy sign actually read "Trespasers Will Be Prosecut". It worked as no one bothered any residents. The perpetual motion of the surf at Bondi influenced the musical ideas which form the basis of this piece - a driving undercurrent topped by a flowing melody which is later heard inverted, as if caught in a rip undertow. In one of his books reviewing Australian music Larry Sitsky describes work: "Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted, a short, frenetic piece written in telegraphic style".
