Work Overview

Arabesques draws on an eclectic range of influences, from the structure of Indian ragas to the symmetries of abstract decorative art to Messiaen's compositional theories. The result, however, is reminiscent of ethnic music of the Eastern Mediterranean. The first movement, slow and floridly decorated, is followed by a vigorous 'moto perpetuo' in 5/8 and 7/8.
