Work Overview

Franklin River (1980) was inspired by the Tasmanian wilderness, and especially by the battle over its conservation at around the time I wrote it. The piece is generally lyrical but uses some extended techniques to heighten the drama. The five main sections can be thought of as introduction, exposition, conflict, resolution and coda; each begins with a version of the opening theme and then freely develops fragments of it.
