Work Overview

Big blue started during December 2018 when I started reading Robinson Crusoe and Lord of the Flies. These books both tell stories of travellers on a boat, sailing the world and ending up crashing on a deserted island. The idea of adventure is thrilling, and these explorers would keep on sailing, not knowing what would be awaiting them at their arrival destination. They were so optimistic of discovering the new world on the other side.

The funny thing is that I didn't finish reading either book. I stopped reading them at the exact same point - the crashing the boat on the island bit.

I travel a lot. I'm not home for more than 3 weeks at a time these days. I'm driving or flying to different places to go record or perform. During a flight from Sydney to Auckland, I started looking out the plane window. It was around an hour and a half into my flight and I still had another hour to go, and I just thought to myself 'What would happen if the plane dropped me right here?' It would be difficult to reach either my home in Sydney or my destination quickly at all. I'd be surrounded by water...

I wanted to capture the idea of being 'dropped in the middle of the ocean'.

Just like those explorers, I leave my home constantly to pursue my dreams. Yet I'm so desperate, waiting for a change to come in my life. I've always wanted to escape everyday life, and find inspiration; find solace in some place happier. Seek acceptance.

It's easy to forget however that if you agree to travel somewhere, in order to get there you have to physically move through a body of water.

You're impatient, as it can feel like nothing around you is changing, and you're seeing nothing but water day after day. There are currents constantly moving and we are still, watching the tides shift. Eventually there will be land in the distance, no matter how crazy the travel plan is or how rough the seas get.

If you learn to appreciate the journey rather than the end result, then happiness doesn't need to be a quest or an escape from myself. You are completely enough. You will find what you're searching for if you stop looking that hard.
