'Avialae' translated from Latin means 'bird wings'and is a reference to the scientific classification of birdsas'Clade Avialae'. The pieceincorporates thebird songs offive endangered Australian species;Painted Snipe, Swift Parrot, Carnbary'sCockatoo, Regent Honey Eaterand the Ground Parrot.Currently these species are threatened by decreasing habitation, competition from other species and introducedferal species.Eachbirdcallis imitatedand improvisedby the performersand,throughout the piece, aretransformedfrom literalinterpretationsto conventional musical melodies.Avialaeexplores a disappearing natural sound world and hopes to bring to attentionour environmentalsituation,whereifnothingis doneto protect our ecosystems,thesesongs may permanently be silenced,onlyto existin ourimaginatio
