This work was commissioned by Decibel New Music Ensemble with the brief of 'electric concerto', the title of the concert it was premiered in. The idea was that the electronic part was to be the most prominent part of the work as in a concerto. As such, the electronic part is quite involved as far as preparation of the Moog Sub 37 synthesiser and the part itself is very detailed and busy during the performance. I tried to leave as much of the electronic part as 'live' as possible as far as was practical.
The first half of the piece has the electronic part dominating the texture and contains also an extended electronic solo. In the second half of the work the electronics are more integrated with the ensemble. There are melodic passages reminiscent of the 'traditional' use of the early Moog instruments but also textural passages more reminiscent of the Buchla approach.
The first performance was done from Decibel's scrolling 'scoreplayer' iPad app which at the time of writing these notes can be purchased from Apple's App Store.
