sad machines & 25 canons / Paul Turner.
Work Overview
Bartolomeo Cristofori invented what came to be called the piano in Tuscany around the year 1700. That we continue to play the instrument or its descendants after more than 300 years is testament to Cristofori's ingenious mechanism. That we continue to bestow a special and peculiar cultural valuation on the modern piano in places far from Tuscany is a matter for serious reflection.
The 'canons' involve the idea of self-similarity. Certain melodic or harmonic sequences can progress at different rates in such a way that the voices are in unison (or in harmony) whenever they coincide.
