Work Overview
The concept of slowly shifting plates that crush and re-form each other's placement is the central paradigm of TECTONIC: Rodinia. In geology Rodinia is the name of a supercontinent that contained most of Earth's landmass between 1.1 billion and 750 million years ago. The word Tectonic can mean both 'the study of the earth's structural features and 'the art of construction' and this work reflects both aspects of the word's meaning. In Rodinia four composer/conductors control separate streams of graphical notation for four ensembles, that emerge in realtime on networked digital scores. The generated notations algorithmically interact with one another causing the musical material to slide, grate and collide in response to the conductors' choices. The performance of the live instruments is also processed according to the conductors' selections and spatialised to the position of the notation on the score. While the performers can only see their own score, the audience sees the interaction of all four streams of notation as they appear and collide.
