Katun River (Pt. 4) brings together a number of elements (and recurring personal obsessions) in a four-bar miniature. The first is my friend Cassie Lewis's text, filtered through the main theme from Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie. The piano accompaniment is a fragmentary pre-hearing of my next stage project, which is an adaptation of Sholem Asch's novel Der Tehilim Yid. The pitch materials derive from a section of the weekly Sabbath liturgy which, on only two days of the year, are re-ordered to reveal the hidden names of Isaac and Rebecca.
Instrumentation: Mezzo-soprano, piano.
Duration: 2 min.
Dedication note: Dedicated to Cassie Lewis-Getman
Written for: Melbourne Art Song Collective (MASC)
First performance: by Melbourne Art Song Collective (MASC) — 15 Mar 18. Melbourne Recital Centre, VIC
