Work Overview

sefirat ha'omer is a partly composed, partly improvised work for any number of performers (solo instrument to full orchestra). The period known as sefirat ha'omer occurs between Passover and Shavuot in the Hebrew calendar. It is a 49 day observance and involves a number of practical laws and mystical customs. One of these customs is the daily recitation of 'sefirot' (the Hebrew word implies both the counting and the names of Kabbalistic emanations), arranged according to a 7 by 7 permutation grid. This piece is a musical analogue of these names, and intercuts each of the seven themes according to their recitation during the 49 day cycle.
