Australian Music on ABC Classic FM in December 2012

Australian Music on ABC Classic FM in December 2012

There's a generous portion of world premieres in this month's ABC Classic FM broadcasts. We celebrate the 25th birthday of West Australia's unusually long-lived and energetic concert presenter Tura New Music with performances from Decibel, Clocked Out Duo, and Ensemble Offspring, who all joined Tura in Perth for the celebrations. The birthday broadcasts feature world premiere performances of new works by Australian composers Erik Griswold, Vanessa Tomlinson, Mace Francis, Chris Cobilis, Cat Hope and Lindsay Vickery, and by French composer Lionel Marchetti.

New Music Up Late occupies the 8pm slot for an Evening Concert live studio concert special digging into the intersections of contemporary chamber music and noise in the work of Australians Austin Buckett and Cat Hope and Buckett's mentor, Austrian composer Peter Ablinger. The broadcast features world premieres by both Australians.

There are more world premieres also across the schedule from composers Maria Grenfell, Robert Davidson, Luke Byrne and Sally Whitwell in concerts by the Australia Ensemble, the Camerata of St John's, and a live broadcast Christmas program from Sydney Children's Choir and Gondwana Voices. And, as we approach her centenary, we remember Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks on New Music Up Late and in an all-Peggy Evening Concert program.

Online, the Australian music podcasts join in the Tura 25th celebrations with selections from the birthday concert recordings and an extended interview with artistic director Tos Mahoney. We continue to expand our classic/amp collection of Australian music recordings from the archives with, among other things, a striking 1993 Australian performance of Peggy Glanville-Hicks's Etruscan Concerto.
