Australian music on ABC Classic FM in December 2013
After the feast in November Australian Music Month it's a little quieter in December. One of the stand-out concert events of the month is the live broadcast launch of the new Hush CD, featuring the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conductor Benjamin Northey and pianist Caroline Almonte in a program of new Australian works and arrangements by Paul Stanhope, Elena Kats-Chernin, Matthew Hindson, Nigel Westlake, Paul Grabowsky, Ross Edwards, Peter Sculthorpe, Maria Grenfell, Brenton Broadstock, Graeme Koehne, Stuart Greenbaum and Iain Grandage.
At the other end of the month is the performance of Brett Dean's large-scale choral orchestral work The Last Days of Socrates by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under conductor Simone Young. In between there are Australian Christmas carols courtesy of concerts by Song Company and the Adelaide Chamber Singers.
Across the month, New Music Up Late brings you music from two festivals, Canberra's Sound Out and Perth's Totally Huge New Music festival, plus a portrait concert of Anthony Pateras and a two-hour special on the music of Ross Edwards.
Online there are podcasts of new bassoon music from Katy Abbott, Gerard Brophy, James Cuddeford, Andrew Schultz, Luke Altmann and bassoonist Mark Gaydon. You can also listen to recent additions to the Rewind collection, including Peter Sculthorpe's 1977/1998 Japanese-inspired vocal chamber work Love Thoughts and Alfred Hill's 1952 Septet for Winds.
