Australian music on ABC Classic FM in May 2013
This month's major broadcast event is a special series of live-to-air concerts from the Canberra International Music Festival on Saturday 11 May, presented as part of this year's Canberra centenary celebrations. The concerts include a festival special line-up under Roland Peelman, the world premiere of Peter Sculthorpe's The Great South Land (a reworking for live performance of his TV opera Quiros), Anna Grinberg and Liam Viney's performance of Percy Grainger's mammoth two-piano work Fantasy on George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, and Synergy Percussion live on New Music Up Late with Timothy Constable's epic tribute to drum and bass, The Shimmering City.
Also at the epic end of percussion music on New Music Up Late this month is TaikOz performing the world premiere of Toward the Crimson Sky, a new work by TaikOz artistic director Ian Cleworth, with an entree of shorter recent percussion pieces by ensemble members Anton Lock and Tom Royce-Hampton. In the realms of chamber music there is Kammer Ensemble with a concert to mark Brett Dean's 50th birthday.
Other May concert broadcasts across the network include chamber music by Ian Munro, Kevin March, Ross Edwards, Peter Sculthorpe and Stuart Greenbaum, and new vocal and guitar music and arrangements from the Song Company and the Grigoryan brothers by Ruth McCall, Roland Peelman, Leonard Grigoryan, Edward Grigoryan, Richard Black and Percy Grainger.
New Waves podcast focuses on large chamber and orchestral music performed by the Arcko Symphonic Project. And there are more recordings from the ABC archives in Rewind: the Australian Music Collection.
