Australian music on ABC Classic FM in October 2014
UPDATE 22 October - Colin Black's new radiophonic work In Search of Captain Cat of Llareggub, scheduled for broadcast on 31 October, will now be broadcast on 8 November.
Carl Vine turns 60 in October and you'll hear from him with both the world premiere broadcast of his new Concerto for Orchestra by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (see AMC Calendar 10-11 October), and two from the archives - an outstanding 2011 performance of his Violin Concerto by the Australian Youth Orchestra and soloist Dene Olding, followed by the Tokyo String Quartet performing Vine's String Quartet No 5.
The month's broadcasts include a good many more world premieres from local composers, starting with another performance by emerging players, the Sydney Conservatorium's Modern Music Ensemble premiering new works by saxophonists Jeremy Rose and Katia Beaugeais, both featuring as soloists in their own compositions. The Beaugeais commission was the product of the 2010 International Young Composer ISCM/IAMIC Award at the ISCM World Music Days in Sydney.
Later in the month, two of ABC Classic FM's Sunday Live concerts feature premieres: Melbourne's Plexus ensemble plays new music by Gordon Kerry and New Zealand composer Brigid Bisley; Pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska and saxophonist Christina Leonard play an as-yet-unnamed new work by Elena Kats-Chernin. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra gives the Australian premiere of Brett Dean's Dramatis personae with trumpet soloist Hakan Hardenberger (see AMC Calendar 22-24 October). And the Southern Cross Soloists premiere a Vocalise by Mark Isaacs.
New Music Up Late is packed with premieres. There's the epic program of new orchestral music by James Hullick working with the Arcko orchestra and his BOLT ensemble, an all-Australian program from the Melbourne Composer's League including premieres by Michael BakrnĨev, Andrew Batterham, Joseph Giovinazzo, Jesmond Grixti, Jane Hammond and Haydn Reeder; and the program goes to the Vivid Festival to hear Jessica Aszodi perform new vocal and electronic music by Jeanette Little, James Rushford, and Anthony Pateras, and to catch a solo percussion work by Alex Pozniak and a long-form electro-acoustic chamber-theatrical meditation by Felicity Wilcox.
Online, the latest addition to the Rewind collection is a 1987 ABC studio recording of Bozidar Kos's Quartet for flute, viola, piano, and percussion. And our New Waves podcasts wrap up a five-part series on Brisbane percussionists Early Warning System and move on to Decibel Ensemble's WA Composer Project.
