Melbourne Digital Concert Hall - a social enterprise conceived to support the arts industry during the COVID-19 crisis and to provide a means for classical soloists and small ensembles to continue their profession - is extending its activities to Perth and Sydney starting today 13 May. The Wednesday 'Satellite Nights Series' is supported by Kawai Australia, Fiona Campbell and the Government House Foundation of WA.

First up in this series is a recital by Ashley Smith and pianist Gladys Chua, streamed from the Government House Ballroom, Perth, today 13 May. For a full Australian program, audiences should tune in on Wednesday 27 May when Ensemble Offspring streams a concert featuring music by Fiona Loader, Claire Edwardes, Kate Moore, Felicity Wilcox, Hollis Taylor & Jon Rose and Gerard Brophy. The regular Melbourne series also has an Australian music program (Holland, Bowman, Sculthorpe) coming up in Greta Bradman and Calvin Bowman's recital on 22 May. Concerts streamed from Melbourne this month also include the series of Beethoven Sonatas played by Ian Munro, among many other events.

Tickets for concerts, at $20 plus $4 booking fee each, can be purchased online. The ticket price goes directly to artists, while the booking fee pays for a piano tuner, technician and transaction costs. The Digital Concert Hall is co-directed by Chris Howlett and Adele Schonhardt.

'All that matters right now is the artist, the audience, and the connection between them. We witnessed the power of that bond last week in Faces of Our Orchestras - a 14-concert festival of symphony players that earned stellar reviews and generated $65,000 in income for players without work. We've engaged over 130 musicians so far and we fully intend to keep building those ties to support many more on a national scale', explains Schonhardt.
