Miloslav Penicka (1935-2019)

Composer Miloslav 'Bob' Penicka (1935-2019) has died in Sydney at the age of 83. Miloslav Penicka was born in Ostrava, Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia) in 1935. He studied composition in Prague in the 1950s, followed by two years of compulsory military service and further studies in composition. He graduated from the Prague Academy of Music Arts in 1964, and married the Australian violinist Janet Harvey, following her to Australia.
Penicka taught piano, and worked in the ABC's music library and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra music library, positions which all informed his composition style. His list of works includes many orchestral works, from large-scale works and concertos to pieces for string orchestras and ensembles, as well as instrumental works - solos and duos - for strings, woodwinds and the piano. Many of his pieces are composed with student performers and youth orchestras in mind, with commissions from Sydney Grammar School, the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra and Nova Youth Orchestra, among others.
