New competition celebrates the past and future of concerto form
The International Spacetime Concerto Competition
The International Space Time Concerto Competition is a new competition with a total prize pool of $50,000. It offers the unique opportunity for 6 finalists to perform with an accompanying orchestra at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music Concert Hall in late 2012. Another 2 finalists will have the opportunity of being accompanied by an international internet-linked ensemble spanning five countries.
The competition borrows from the richness of musical history, embraces the future and promotes the present, seeking musicians from all genres including but not limited to virtuoso classical instrumentalists, orchestral players, jazz performers, contemporary bands, electronic, experimental and new media artists. It aims to encourage unique creative collaborations with composers, performers, producers and AV/mixing engineers, all working together to produce innovative new works.
Any undergraduate, postgraduate or international student, or alumni of any Australian tertiary institution, is able to enter one of two categories, Innovative, or Historical.
Innovative: Remix, recontextualise, create your own instrument or 3D visualisation performance. Compose your own concerto. Perform with a live orchestra or an international internet link ensemble made up of musicians from 5 nations. More details on the Innovative category
Historical: For virtuoso instrumentalists or orchestral performers who want to perform a Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern or Postmodern concerto with an orchestra to an international audience. More details on the Historical category
The brainchild of the University of Newcastle, the initiative is
a creative collaboration with the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of
Music in Singapore, Central Conservatory of Music in
Beijing, Waikato University in New Zealand and
Ars Electronica in Austria.
Entry submissions can be made online, and will also need a
supporting audition clip or showreel. Entries are open now until
July 1 2012.
