Opportunity: Asian Composers League Young Composer Competition 2014

Australian composers under the age of 30 are invited to submit scores for the Asian Composers League Young Composer Competition. The competition forms part of the 32nd Asian Composers League (ACL) Festival & Conference in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan, on 2-7 November 2014. There are monetary prizes of US$500, $300 and $200, but more important is the chance to have a festival performance and to be able to travel and meet other composers.

The Melbourne Composers' League will select one young composer to represent Australia at the upcoming festival's competition. Composers should be Australian citizens, or permanent residents, and born after 6 November 1984. The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2014.


Instrumentation and duration

Pieces for a pair of the same instrument, such as two violins or two trombones. The available instruments are as follows: violin, viola, violoncello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, and saxophone. The piece must be between 5 and 8 minutes in duration.


Other details

The score, along with the title of the work, the composer's name in English on the cover and the following information (see below: a-k) must be submitted. The information should be written either in Japanese or in English and, where applicable, Chinese names should include the equivalent Chinese ideographs.

c. Address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address
d. Title of the work
e. Year composed
f. Duration, instrumentation
g. Biography of composer (maximum 150 words)
h. Program notes (maximum 150 words)
i. Has the work been performed? If yes, where? Has the work been performed in Japan? If yes, when?
j. CD of the work (if available)
k. Photo of the composer

A total of US$1,000 in cash prizes will be given to up to three winners. Winner of the first prize will be invited to write a new piece to be premiered during the next ACL festival (no additional commission fee is involved). The ACL Japan Section will provide hotel accommodation for the young composers for the duration of the festival.
