Sibelius Awards finalists announced

Sibelius Composer Awards 2008 finalists have been announced. The finalists of the secondary school component of the competition are Liam Kemp (15 years, from the ACT), Jackson Sweeney (16 years, from Victoria) and Liane Papantoniou (15 years, from New South Wales). There are two finalists in the tertiary school category: Jesse McVeity (19), who studies at the Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne, and Chie Tsang Lee (24) from the University of Western Australia.

The young composers' works will be premiered by Ensemble Offspring in the awards concert on 26 October. In the same concert, Ensemble Offspring will give the first performance of Peter McNamara's new work The German Hills and the Australian premiere of Damien Ricketson's Same Steps. The finalists were selected by Paul Grabowsky, Anne Boyd, James Morrison, Matthew Hindson and Ensemble Offspring. The winners will be announced at the end of the concert.

In cooperation with Sibelius, Ensemble Offspring and MLC School, the Australian Music Centre has prepared a special education resource for secondary and tertiary music students, focusing on Ricketson's Same Steps. Stepping Stones kit provides learning resources and live listening experiences for years 9 to 12. More information about the kit is available on the AMC website.

Peter McNamara's new work for clarinet, cello, violin and percussion is inspired by the Prussian settlement in the Adelaide Hills in the 1800s. McNamara is one of Australian Music Centre's Associate composers, and the winner of the inaugural Sibelius Emerging Composer Commission. Another composition of his, Landscape of Diffracted Colours, will be played on the very same day (26 October) by Ensemble Modern at the ISCM World Music Days in Lithuania, conducted by Peter Eötvös.
