The AMC farewells Judith

The AMC farewells Judith

The AMC's team will be undergoing a significant change towards the end of the year, as we say farewell to our long-term Music Resources Manager Judith Foster, who has resigned from her role after more than 26 years with the organisation.

Judith has been in charge of the development of the AMC's Library collection and its move, over the last 10 years, towards a digital collection. She had a major role in the development and introduction of the AMC's online system, which incorporates the FRBR data model - a pioneering step in the international library world at the time and still the standard for rich metadata creation and provision of access to resources. Judith was also very involved in the AMC's major digitisation project in 2013-2015.

Judith has collaborated closely with many of the AMC's partners, including the National Library of Australia, ABC, orchestras, ensembles and tertiary music libraries. She's been much involved with IAML (the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres) and its close network of colleagues around Australia and overseas. During her time, the AMC's Library collection has been relocated three times - a big and painful, if also satisfying, operation.

'I have been proud to work for the AMC for such a long time and to be part of its role as a "centre of gravity" for the art music sector in Australia, and be involved in many important developments and changes. Being able to work in an area of specialist librarianship is something to be valued, especially as the world moves towards generalisation. I have been very fortunate to have worked in such a supportive, creative, collaborative and vibrant working environment, for a long time under the leadership of John Davis. It has been a privilege to witness the development of the careers of many Australian composers and artists, some of whom I first met when they were undergrads. I wish my colleagues all the very best, and thank them for their collegiality, their dedication, and friendship.'

The AMC's members, represented artists and customers have grown used to relying on Judith's wide expertise and dedication, and the staff will miss her guidance and warm leadership. We wish her well, wherever she goes.

Thanks Judith

Judith Foster will be missed by so many composers. She is so supportive and kind, and nothing ever seems a bother to her. Thanks and blessings for your future horizons Judith.

Thank you Judith

For many of us, Judith has been the face of the AMC. As a writer and teacher, I have appreciated Judith's warm and generous assistance. Judith is also a performer, having been a long-time member of the Cafe of the Gate of Salvation choir. Best wishes for the next stage of your musical journey.

OMG, the dreaded day has finally come! How very much we will miss you Judith. Just to know you were there to patiently answer questions, calm us down, locate missing scores, generally sort things out and give expert advice has been so important to us. You’ve been wonderful. You are wonderful. Thank you for every one of those 26 years and may the years ahead be happy and fulfilling for you and Frank.

With love and gratitude from Helen and me,

Ross Edwards
