'Voss' and four new works scheduled for Victorian Opera's 2021 season
The 15-year-old Victorian Opera has commissioned a new work from Yorta Yorta composer and soprano Deborah Cheetham, as part of a series of four new operas in the VO's yet-to-be-announced 2021 season. Parrwang Lifts the Sky tells the creation story of the sunrise, from the oral history of the Wathaurong people of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. The work will be Victorian Opera's Education Production for 2021 and will be livestreamed to thousands of primary and secondary students statewide as part of the company's Access All Areas: Livestream Program.
In 15 years, the Victorian Opera has commissioned an impressive series of 32 new works, five of which are currently in development. In addition to Cheetham's work, the forthcoming works as part of next year's season are Simon Bruckard & Constantine Costi's Cassandra; Kevin March & Jane Montgomery-Griffiths's Echo and Narcissus; and the company's artistic director Richard Mills's Butterfly Lovers, with Joel Tan as librettist.
Victorian Opera's 2021 will also include a semi-staged performance of Richard Meale and David Malouf's Voss, based on Patrick White's novel, and a revival of a production of Julian Langdon, Casey Bennetto and Gillian Cosgriff's operatic cabaret Lorelei.
