Julius Schwing is an award winning improvising guitarist and composer from Bruny Island, Lutruwita/Tasmania. Born in Vienna, he started playing guitar at age nine and since the age of thirteen has performed in Australia, Japan, Europe, India, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, including at the Nelson Arts Festival (NZ), Adelaide Fringe Festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, MONA FOMA, Dark MOFO, Faux Mo, Perth International Jazz Festival, Falls Festival, 10 Days on the Island. He has three times been nominated for the prestigious Freedman Jazz Fellowship and placed 3rd in the 2022 National Jazz Awards. Julius was recently awarded a state luminary APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award.

Julius has released 12 albums. "Potbelly Stove" (2012), "Edge2:Isthmus" (2016) , "On The Beach" (2017) "Rust and Thirst" (2017), "Rhubarb" (2018), At the Lighthouse (2019), "Wagtail" (2022) LIVE at Make it Up Club (2022) and "Embrace" (2023) "Die Alte Ballerina" (2023 - audiobook) "DOP2" (2025) and For HP (2025) 10 of which are released on his own creative music label Isthmus Music.

Julius has spent time getting lessons in New York and has twice been invited to Canada (2009 and 2013) to take part in the prestigious Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music led by Dave Douglas (2009) and Vijay Iyer (2013). Amongst others, Julius has performed with Paul Capsis, Scott Tinkler, Brian Ritchie, Gotye, Scott McConnachie, Jeremy Rose, Erkki Veltheim, Peter Knight, Elly Hoyt, Petra Haden (USA), Aakash Mittal (USA), Christian Windfeld (Denmark) as well as leading his own groups.

His current projects include the virtuosic and genre bending high velocity trio Reptrillion Culture Club (RCC), Dogs of Pleasure - duo with drummer Alf Jackson, Dreamworld Realworld with Matilda Martin, GROUND with Scott Tinkler and his solo acoustic work as heard on his critically acclaimed 2022 release "Wagtail". Julius's distinct improvising style and compositions are heavily influenced by the dramatic natural surroundings of his home on Bruny Island and a life lived in constant contact with this environment.
