Rishin Singh : Associate Artist

Rishin Singh (b. 1985, Kuala Lumpur) is a composer, formerly of Sydney, living in Berlin since 2013. His compositional practice involves repetitive, ritual-like, politically-engaged music embedded within the social realm, frequently concerned with environmental issues.

His works appear on records released by Beacon Sound, Edition Wandelweiser Records, Farpoint Recordings, and Intonema. Commissions by: JACK Quartet (US), Fabrik Quartet (DE), Flinders Quartet (AUS), Sähkökitarakvartetti (FI), Piano+ (US), Claire Edwardes (AUS), Prof. Martin Sturm (DE), the Amsterdam Wandelweiser Festival (NL), Quiet Music Ensemble (IE), and others.

Highlighted performances include at Linos Festival (Köln), Sacrum Profanum Festival (Krakow), The NOW now Festival (Sydney), Festival Belluard (Fribourg, CH), and Klangraum (Düsseldorf) by musicians including EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble (UK), Huw Morgan (UK), Luisa Rapa (DE), and DNK Ensemble (NL).
He has recently been a finalist in the APRA Art Music Awards (Work of the Year: chamber music), and awarded two Berlin Senat für Kultur Composition Stipends and three Musikfonds Neustart Kultur Stipends. His work has been supported by GVL, initiative neue musik Berlin, Fonds Darstellende Künste, and AUSCO.

Singh has taught composition guest workshops at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar, UdK Berlin Sound Studies Department, and the Technical University of Dortmund.

He has a Bachelor of Music Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and a Bachelor of Arts in Performance Studies (Honours 1st Class) from the University of Sydney. Private composition study with Sarah Nemtsov and Georg Friedrich Haas. In 2025 Singh will begin a practice-based PhD in Composition ('Composing Unspectacular Occidentalist Opera') at University College Cork, as a Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial Scholar supervised by John Godfrey and Yvon Bonenfant.
