In his ASO debut, the young British conductor, Rory Macdonald, brings a Bohemian hero, Australian new music and a legendary British enigma to Adelaide. ASO Principal Piccolo, Julia Grenfell, is centre stage for the Adelaide premiere of Paul Stanhope’s new Piccolo Concerto, alongside Janáček’s dramatic and rhapsodic portrayal of Gogol’s Cossack hero, Taras Bulba. Elgar’s evergreen Enigma Variations closes the concert.
