A festival essential, the now legendary Argonaut Quartet returns to the Capital stage for BIFEM’s opening night. In this rich, layered concert, Taiwanese-Australian composer Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh’s newest string quartet, Dwindling as the Beginning of More Vibrant Things, receives its Australian premiere. Following on from his BIFEM début with defunensemble in 2015, Finnish composer Sami Klemola makes a welcome return to BIFEM through the Australian premiere of his string quartet Concrete. Perth-based Polish composer Dobromia Jaskot and US composer Michelle Lou make their BIFEM débuts, each with works of stunning beauty and acuity. A consistent highlight of the BIFEM experience, the Argonaut Quartet is, as always, not to be missed.
