Syzygy 2018 – Hommage à M. Debussy
Claude Debussy is widely regarded as the father of modern classical music. In the centenary year of his death, Syzygy takes the final three sonatas of Debussy as points of departure for three concerts that explore the fantastical and multi-faceted contemporary legacy of this bold, exploratory musician. In the pioneering spirit of Debussy, we also include a newly-commissioned Australian work in each concert.
Concert 2. Claire de Lune
With nightfall comes moonlight, the earth bathed in strange hues and half-tints. Debussy’s Cello sonata was originally titled ‘Pierrot Howls at the Moon’ and, along with the mystical ‘Apollinaire Songs’ of Rosalind Page, conjures up a fantastical moonlit world full of folkloric hyperactivity and danger. In a more reflective mode, Caerwen Martin’s ‘Midnight Loon’ frames the unassumingly beautiful call of a North American aquatic bird against a hypnotically static night-scape. This concert also features the premiere of Tim Dargaville's After and Before.
Program
Claude Debussy - Sonata for Cello and Piano
Caerwen Martin - Midnight Loon
Tim Dargaville - After and Before
Rosalind Page - Apollinaire Songs
