Event Details
Award-winning trumpeter and composer Ellen Kirkwood leads her brand-new quartet of talented locals, presenting nature-inspired and climate change-reactive works which exemplify her characterful and moody compositional style. She has recruited the vibrant and unique talents of Hilary Geddes on guitar (Hilary Geddes Quartet, The Buoys), Nick Henderson on bass and synths (Arcing Wires, Emily-Rose and the Wild Things) and Alex Inman-Hislop (Zela Margossian Quintet, Steve Barry’s Blueprints Trio) to bring her music to life.
Throughout this 1-hour set, Kirkwood’s evocative composition combines with eclectic group and solo improvisations, to fuel the imagination with imagery, feeling and a healthy dose of weird. The bulk of this set was written as part of her recent Honours project on climate activism through emotive music, with a focus on the work and philosophies of avant-garde composer-performer Meredith Monk.
Ellen Kirkwood was the 2019 winner of the NSW APRA Art Music Award for Excellence in Jazz, and the 2012 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award. She was a finalist in the 2017 Freedman Jazz Fellowships, and her groundbreaking [A]part suite for Sirens Big Band was a finalist for APRA Jazz Work of the Year in 2018.
