Event Details

Leader of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian String Quartet, Dale Barltrop, joins Ensemble Q in the first of their five exciting explorations into the wonderful world of chamber music in 2018. Ravel's incredible Mother Goose Suite was originally conceived for piano four hands and dedicated to the young children, Mimi and Jean Godebski. Ravel immortalises five famous French children's tales. Heard here in a new arrangement by Ensemble Q's co-director, Trish O'Brien, this presents a colourful and evocative start to the 2018 season.

Combining his love and knowledge of the Wind Quintet with his favourite instrument, the Cello, Ensemble Q's Paul Dean wrote this piece as a colourful showcase for the prodigious talents of Trish O'Brien and his Ensemble Q wind colleagues. Glazounov's rarely heard Reverie Orientale is an extraordinary snapshot of a composer who has all but fallen through the cracks of music history. This beautiful one movement work recalls the exotic nature of the East, and throughout the mood is dreamy with a sense of the remote. The D minor piano trio of Mendelssohn is one of the great favourites in the chamber music repertoire. From its soaring opening cello theme to the excitement of the virtuosic finale, the piece leaves the listener, uplifted, moved and enchanted all at once.
