SALLY WHITWELL 7.30pm “Sharp, evocative and powerful” – Anna Lock, Australian Stage

Aria Award-winning, ABC recording artist, pianist and composer Sally Whitwell will perform a selection of her favourite contemporary classical works alongside her own compositions. Sally has won two ARIA Awards for Best Classical Album: in 2013, for All Imperfect Things: Solo Piano Music of Michael Nyman, and in 2011, for her debut album Mad Rush: Solo Piano Music of Philip Glass. Her sophomore album The Good, the Bad and the Awkward is a truly unique compilation of film music where she plays not only piano but toy piano, harpsichord, recorder and melodica. Recent solo concert appearances have included the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Complete Piano Etudes for the Perth International Arts Festival; further performances with Glass in Los Angeles and New York City.

EPHEMERA TRIO 8.30pm

“Arresting, genre-blurring..Disquieting music with massive breadth and high drama.” John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Ephemera Trio: a musical exploration of celestial landscapes such as pulsars, craters, planetary atmospheres, stars, sun and void. Merging the sound worlds of jazz and contemporary classical, and set to real space sounds, it is an original sonic experience. The ensemble is led by Keyna Wilkins (piano/flute/compositions) with Elsen Price (double bass/loop pedal) and Will Gilbert (trumpet) and includes freely improvised pieces. NASA recordings of electromagnetic waves from planets and stars is the backdrop soundtrack and has been complied by astronomer Professor Paul Francis often with projections of space probe footage. Each member brings their own unique voice to the ensemble drawing from a multitude of musical backgrounds. Elsen is a new music specialist, Will is a jazz trumpeter and Keyna is a jazz/classical/flamenco musician and composer, who combine to create a distinctive sound world that organically react to stellar concepts. Universe and Universality. Formed in 2015, this trio have had a series of successful shows around Sydney including being featured in the Sydney International Womens’ Jazz Festival 2017. ephemeraensemble.com
