Event Details

This year LCYO is privileged and excited to be working on a composition project inspired by artworks from the Australian Collection in the Art Gallery of NSW. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was the springboard for a collective composition. But, move over Mussorgsky! In April, six of our young musician-composers toured the Australian Collection in the AGNSW with two art educators. Each composer chose an artwork to reflect in their music. LCYO composer-in-residence, Tim Hansen, provided guidance to help each one to compose a mini orchestral score. Chief conductor and artistic director Mark Brown workshopped the music at the orchestral camp in June, after which, other members of the orchestra were invited to help create recurring themes that link the individual movements. These ‘Promenades’ depict the progress of the gallery visitors as they amble from one artwork to the next. This rich tapestry of new composition will be premiered at the concert Inspired by Art on 15 September 2019 in the Conservatorium of Music, as part of the Lane Cove Festival. Awe-inspiring images of the artworks will be projected onto a screen behind the orchestra during its performance. Not to be missed. Booking details below. LCYO thanks Lane Cove Council and art educators and the image reproduction team from AGNSW for their assistance and generosity. The concert programme will also include works by Beethoven, Mussorgsky and Saint- Saens, and performance by special guests the Willoughby Girls’ High School Chamber Ensemble with Director Lucy East.

Tim Hansen, composer in residence, provided guidance to student composers during this LCYO composition project. Tim Hansen also composed themes to help link the separate student compositions to form a complete suite including some ideas suggested by members of the LCYO ensemble.

Featured non-Australian music: Beethoven, Mussorgsky, Saint-Saens
