Event Details

This concert by one of Australia's best orchestras features Sibelius grand, exciting Symphony No. 2. This long-time orchestral favourite ends with a joyous and resplendent finale. While the overtures Beethoven composed for his opera Fidelio are performed frequently, the earliest opera overtures we now hear played regularly by symphony orchestras are Mozart's; the one for his mystical fairy-tale The Magic Flute is perhaps his most sublime.

Ross Edwards, one of Australia's most admired composers, has created a haunting and beautiful concerto for the MSO's Principal Clarinet, David Thomas. These will be the work's first performances outside Melbourne.

Featured non-Australian music: Mozart, Sibelius
