Melbourne Youth Orchestra presents an exhilarating a program of music from new worlds.

Melbourne Youth Orchestra continues its fiftieth birthday celebrations with an exhilarating program of music from new worlds.

Directed by Chief Conductor Steven Hillinger, the program opens with the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by renowned Australian composer Graeme Koehne.

This is followed by William Lovelock’s dazzling Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, performed by MYO Alumnus Josh Rogan. Written in 1968 for Australian trumpet player John Robertson, it is a favourite with performers and audiences, and remains his most-often performed work.

Dvořák’s triumphant Symphony No. 9 From the New World closes the program. From the New World incorporates influences from African-American spirituals and American landscapes, and rhythms from Dvořák’s native Bohemia. Symbolically, Neil Armstrong chose to take a recording of this symphony with him to the moon in 1969.
