Event Details
Piano quartets are the forgotten treasures of chamber music. They require piano, violin, viola and cello, rather than a standard line-up of piano trio or string quartet. So the piano quartet repertoire has often languished in the corner like an attractive but difficult to seat solo dinner guest.
As a result, it is rare to hear these gorgeous works performed at the highest professional level. Musica Viva has seized the opportunity to do so by combining one of Europe’s most electrifying new ensembles, the Morgenstern Trio, with the exciting virtuosity of Australian violist Christopher Moore. The Morgensterns will make their first national tour, following rave reviews in the great concert halls of Europe and North America. Their energy and vivacity is a great match for Christopher’s renowned on-stage charisma – expect performances of unbounded dynamism!
This captivating program opens with Mahler’s only instrumental chamber work, a single, stunning movement from his youth; and closes with a masterpiece from Schumann’s so-called ‘year of chamber music’. Ross Edwards’s acclaimed Trio and Beethoven’s exquisite op 70 no 2 – ‘the most miraculous piece, the perfect trio for us,’ according to violinist Stefan Hempel – complete a richly rewarding concert.
Featured non-Australian music: Mahler, Beethoven, Schumann
