Event Details

Canadian Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School bustles with a looping energy, evoking the pressures and pace of city life, voiced by Jenna Cave and The Divergence Jazz Orchestra.

Direct from the Perth International Jazz Festival, saxophonist Chelsea McBride (Canada) brings her harmonically layered, infectiously energetic work to a big band setting under the auspices of Jenna Cave’s Divergence Jazz Orchestra. The native Canadian won the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award, and toured her work across Canada and North America. Her debut release as Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School took a modernist, orchestral approach to jazz, charting the journey of a daydreaming commuter – a bustling, polyrhythmic jostle of interlocking instrumentation, alive with the energy and distraction of city life.

Sydney-based Jenna Cave is a composer, arranger, bandleader, conductor, and saxophonist who excels in bringing large ensemble contemporary jazz music to the stage. The award-winning graduate of the ANU School of Music and Sydney Conservatorium of Music has worked extensively as a composer, and had her works performed internationally in NYC (Yates String Quartet directed by Ron Wasserman) and St Petersburg (string orchestra Warm and Peace conducted by Yoshimi Sakai). Cave has also been commissioned to compose for TV and film. She presently heads the Divergence Jazz Orchestra; a seven-year-old Sydney institution in modern jazz. At home in quiet moments as in feverish energy, McBride’s compositions conducted by Jenna Cave and played by the prestigious Divergence Jazz Orchestra will thrill fans of big band instrumental jazz.
