Event Details
Alexina Hawkins' third and final concert as a Fellow at the Australian National Academy of Music immerses the listener in the manifold shades of colour in sound. Athens-based composer and viola-da-gambist Nicoleta Chatzopoulou's subtle and visceral music begins the concert, followed by an improvisation by percussionist Thea Rossen on the other-worldly sounds of the aquaphone. Antiphonal violas will then present 'elsewhere; everywhere' by Melbourne's Sam Smith, whose music “glistens with totally gorgeous sonorities” (the Age, 2014). The concert will conclude with Michael Gordon's beautiful 'Light is Calling', written in response to September 11, which "juxtaposes the sound of an acoustic violin* with warped electronic pulses played backwards". *VIOLA
Featured non-Australian music: Nicoleta Chatzopoulou, Athens - "continuum ii" (World Premiere); Michael Gordon, New York - "Light is Calling"
